National Recovery Month and How You Can Help

National Recovery Month

National Recovery Month is an opportunity. It allows people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction or mental health disorders to share the value of recovery and the possibilities it opens up. This September, consider what you can do to help someone who is struggling to find the support and help they need.

What Is National Recovery Month?

National Recovery Month occurs every September to celebrate the accomplishments of people in recovery. It is the perfect time to pat yourself on the back and realize just how hard you have worked and continue to work to achieve the healthy lifestyle you are living.

You don’t have to be perfect to make a difference. When you share your story or offer a helping hand to someone struggling, you may save a life.

Think back a bit about how you struggled. Perhaps you struggled with managing anxiety disorders for years, but somehow you took the steps necessary to get help. Why did you do that? What did you find out when you did? Tell that story to someone who is like that version of yourself. Encourage them. Let them know what recovery looks like.

Steps You Can Take Today to Help Others During National Recovery Month

There are numerous ways to observe National Recovery Month. Creating new relationships, providing perspective, and offering your own personal story help other people see that they can do it, too. There are numerous ways to get active this month.

  • Visit a Local Treatment Center to Volunteer

Give back by sharing your own story, providing insight into what helped you move forward, and offering encouragement to others. Someone getting treatment needs to know how they can manage stress without breaking. Perhaps another person wants to know that your health has improved and that they should keep fighting for their own.

  • Attend an Event

Your community may have numerous events taking place to educate and support others during National Recovery Month. Some options are available on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website.  You may be able to participate in an event just to listen or share. Perhaps bring a friend with you.

  • Talk About Your Story on Social Media

If you are ready and want to share your story, this is a great time to do so. Consider what you would tell yourself a few years ago when you were at your worst. Consider talking about what you did to recover and the work that went into it.

By sharing your story, you are creating an opportunity for others to see themselves in your journey. That may help open the door for new decisions – such as reaching out for help.

  • Reward The Good

This is a journey filled with challenges, and now is the perfect time to recognize your hard work. Write a note to the therapist who helped you. Create a journal in which you tell your own story (digital versions work, too!). On social media, talk about why you are rewarding yourself and the accomplishments you’ve achieved since your recovery started.

It may be a great time to celebrate yourself, too. You’ve taken on a battle that kills thousands of people every year. You’re winning it. That is something you deserve to be recognized for.

At the same time, you may know that life isn’t perfect and that you are still working towards a solid footing. Recognize that slow and steady progress is progress, and it helps you create a future that fits your specific goals. Now is the perfect time to work on those areas where you still want to see growth.

What to Do Now to Help Your Loved One

Another very important way to celebrate National Recovery Month is by reaching out to a friend who you know needs help. They may be battling addiction, fighting depression, or struggling to find help for their child with mental health concerns. Offer a hand. Provide encouragement. Sometimes, all you can do is listen.
