Inpatient Therapy or Day Treatment: How to Know What Level of Help You Need

Willow Creek - Inpatient Therapy or Day Treatment How to Know What Level of Help You Need

Mental health disorders range in severity and form. If you are considering the need for mental health support right now, do not hesitate to visit us at Willow Creek. You do not need to know what type of care you need or make an appointment. Just come in for treatment.

If you’re not sure what to expect with a treatment program, know that every person receives care based on their symptoms and specific needs. Of course, factors such as your safety and desires matter. Here’s what you need to know about the differences in inpatient therapy and day treatment, and how to find out which is best for your situation.

When Is Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment Needed?

Inpatient psychiatric treatment at Willow Creek is a type of short-term, acute care program designed for children between the ages of 5 and 17, adults, and seniors. These programs are ideal for those who are facing psychiatric or behavioral issues related to:

Our program creates a safe, supported environment that offers guidance and critical resources you need in critical situations. In this environment, you will receive 24/7 care. That includes:

  • Active safety risk management is especially important to those who have plans or intents on hurting themselves or others
  • Acute system management, including for hallucinations, delusions, severe mania, or severe depression
  • Support for inability to function, essential for those who cannot take care of themselves, including eating, bathing, or meeting daily needs, due to their mental health disorder and symptoms
  • Medically supported detox services for individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) alongside mental health disorders
  • Relapse support and treatment failure prevention are specifically beneficial for those who have struggled through ineffective outpatient treatment

These treatment programs are critical to saving your life. If you are at risk right now, contact 988 immediately or visit our treatment center. The help you need to gain stability is available, no matter how challenging it may seem right now. We are here to help.

When Is Day Treatment Needed?

Day treatment provides care at a high level but does not require you to live at the treatment center. Our day treatment program, also called a partial hospitalization program (PHP), allows your therapist and care team to develop a treatment protocol that incorporates intensive support and structured treatment. This program provides care to you:

  • For six hours each day
  • Five days a week of treatment
  • Living at home with access to additional care when necessary

If you need intensive treatment most days of the week, but you are not harming yourself or others, and therefore do not need 24-hour supervision, a day treatment program may be beneficial. It can provide you with a range of benefits, including:

  • High-frequency care, which is significantly more than what you would receive with traditional outpatient treatment, gives you better access to the type of care you need
  • Step-down treatment for those who are moving from inpatient care to outpatient treatment and still need a strong hold as they make that change
  • Those at risk and in need of preventative care, including situations where your condition may be worsening or yet to be controlled, but you are not quite at the level of needing hospitalization
  • Structured, individualized treatment programs designed to meet your needs, including for those who have anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders

During day treatment, you work closely with a team, and you consistently receive a high level of support. What you will find is that the care focuses heavily on helping you to thrive in the world outside of treatment.
