Does Your Child Need an Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program?

Willow Creek - Does Your Child Need an Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program

Teens are often expected to be overwhelmed, stressed, and even questioning. They may be at a point in their life where they are trying to be their own person. A fine line exists between healthy teen strife and emotional and mental health challenges. Understanding that line is difficult for any parent.

At Willow Creek Behavioral Health, we offer a program designed to provide therapeutic, structured support for your teen. They can maintain their daily routines and still live at home. But they are getting exceptional care and the support they need. Our adolescent intensive outpatient program (IOP) may be more beneficial to your teen than you realize.

How Adolescent IOP Works

IOP is a type of outpatient, part-time program. It doesn’t remove your child from their home, school, or other environment. Instead, it offers your child an opportunity to engage with professionals who can support them through challenging moments in their life.

More specifically, IOP is a way to provide your child with the mental health support they need without disrupting too much of their daily life and obligations. They remain connected to home and school throughout treatment.

Who Benefits from Adolescent IOP?

Our IOP program can help many teens through challenging situations. These programs embrace kids where they are in their mental health. Most will have moderate to severe symptoms that impact their daily life. Your teen may benefit from this program if any of the following apply:

  • Your teen needs more help than outpatient care offers. Outpatient care often offers once-a-week treatment. That’s often not enough for those dealing with trauma, severe anxiety, or depressive symptoms.
  • Your teen is leaving inpatient treatment. In this situation, IOP works as a transitionary period. It provides less help than inpatient care, but doesn’t leave them without the support they still need.
  • Your teen is struggling with specific needs. For example, children who are facing self-harm behavior, trauma, or early-stage substance use disorder need more frequent and impactful care.

We know that every person’s needs differ vastly. That is why we offer full assessments and comprehensive evaluations to determine what your child’s specific needs are. Inpatient care isn’t always the best option, but outpatient care often doesn’t provide enough support. That is when IOP tends to be helpful.

If your teen is dealing with any of the following, speak to us for an assessment to determine if IOP is the best fit:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Self-harm
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder

Sometimes having a one-on-one conversation with our team can offer you the supportive resources you need in tough situations, like deciding what level and type of treatment you need. By making the decision to seek an assessment, you are creating a better opportunity for long-term success.

How Does Adolescent IOP Work for Teens?

There is some flexibility in scheduling and the type of care provided. However, at Willow Creek, our adolescent IOP program runs from Monday through Thursday every week. We meet from 4:30 pm until 7:35 pm. Those who attend in-person receive an evening meal.

There are options available to fit most needs. For example, sessions are available for in-person meetings or virtual support. That gives your family more flexibility without limiting their ability to obtain the type of care they need.

What Happens During Adolescent IOP and Is It Enough for Your Child?

One of the most common concerns families have is knowing the type of treatment their teen needs for mental health concerns. There’s no step-by-step program that solves everyone’s concerns. Instead, each person receives a personalized treatment plan that addresses their past, mental health experiences, future goals, and current skills.

Our IOP meetings offer various ways to embrace their mental health. Group therapy sessions allow for peer-building opportunities and real-world strategy and communication skill development.

Your child will have the opportunity to work with counselors and therapists who can help them where they are right now. That means providing them with therapy that aligns with the trauma or mental health disorder symptoms they have.

Our environment is a positive, supportive one. It’s not a place where your teen sits and waits. Rather, they are engaged, learning, and growing during each meeting and experience.
