Tips for Starting a Dialogue

Talking to a family member or friend about their mental health needs can be difficult. Here are some tips for starting that dialogue:

  • Explain to the person why you are concerned about them. Use a caring manner and stay calm.
  • Offer options. If the person doesn’t want help today, ask if they would like to go next week or next month.
  • Be available to support them. Offer to take them for the assessment, or ask if they would like you to be present during the assessment.
  • Offer alternatives to Willow Creek. If the person isn’t interested in our services, maybe there is another environment where they would feel more comfortable initially.
  • If none of the above is an option at this time, you can consider joining a local support group in Brown county for family members of people struggling with mental health challenges.

Admission to one our outpatient or inpatient programs in Green Bay starts with a confidential phone call. One of our mental health experts is available 24/7 to set up a free, in-personal mental health evaluation the same day.
